Q Pollution or not washing hair properly can cause hair damage. What are the other factors?
A Damaged hair requires extra protection and it is therefore essential to assess the condition of your hair and use the appropriate hair care products. Hair can be damaged due to various causes and this includes improper use of flat irons, blow-dryers, curling irons, improper mechanical manipulations of hair like improper combing, brushing, styling of hair, chemical treatments of hair etc.
Q How can this be prevented?
A Once the hair shaft is damaged it can’t be completely restored, however products can help minimize damage and help the hair to look and feel healthy. Simple things like using a wide toothed comb while detangling your hair, avoidance of rubber elastic bands to tie the hair too tight that tug and pull the hair, use of a cap or scarf whilst in the sun definitely help minimize damage. It is also advised to avoid frequent and improper use of heat styling equipments. Always use a conditioner after you shampoo. Also, depending on the condition of your hair it may be advised to use leave in conditioners, deep penetrating conditioners, blow drying solutions etc. It is important to adopt a hair care regime that best suits your hair. If your hair is over exposed to sun and pollution due to excessive travelling, it is advisable to use a leave-on conditioner that protects it from damage and also keep it covered while travelling.
Q As most of the shampoos consist of strong chemicals, how often do you suggest people to wash their hair?
A Everyone is different with different hair types and hair needs and hence while some believe that they should wash daily others believe that they should wash once a week. I usually advice my patients to wash 2 or 3 times a week, however this can vary depending on what works for an individual . Excessive washing of hair strips the hair of its natural oils and may make it prone to damage. Also it is always advisable to use a conditioner post shampooing hair.
Q When hair is chemically damaged is it more difficult to bring it back to healthy and nourished hair? Any home remedy?
A Home remedies will vary from over the counter deep conditioning products to self preparations. Most of the over the counter preparations will come with instructions on usage. Home remedies also include avocado and egg, using coconut oil or olive oil or other cooking oils that can condition the hair.
